From The Archives: 60 Years Ago In Aviation Week
The power package of the US Army-Hughes XV-9A hot cycle research helicopter mated with the fuselage was featured on Aviation Week's cover of June 22, 1964 at a Hughes Tool Co. Aircraft Division facility in Culver City, California.
An accompanying article noted that "the hot cycle concept offers one of the most promising methods of reducing the weight and complexity associated with shaft drive systems of conventional rotary-wing aircraft and is particularly suited to large helicopters."
Funded by the Army Transportation Research Command and designed and built by Hughes, "the XV-9A is designed to provide flight test verification of the hot cycle system concept in which the rotor is driven by exhaust gasses expelled at the blade tips."
